I had the pleasure of catching up with author and LGBT immigration activist Judy Rickard this afternoon over a cup of tea and the crumbliest cookies in the world. We met because I want to write something for the local South Bay alt-weekly to share her story about being separated from her partner, Karin, because they claim none of the immigration rights granted to hetero married couples under U.S. federal law.
Judy wrote about her struggle a couple years ago in a book called "Torn Apart: United by Love, Divided by Law." She kindly gave me a copy, which I look forward to reading this week/weekend. You can find it online here, along with volumes of stories she's compiled on the plight of other bi-national gay and lesbian couples.
Judy and Karin signed the title page of my copy with a message to, "Please share our stories to help us all."
I'll do my best, ladies! Thanks for sharing yours with me ^_^
